The rise of social media has revolutionised the way that we communicate, and opened up a powerful new field of online event detection. By using the connections of the web we can harness the collective reporting power of many human users, enabling event detection faster and even of things that are very challenging by other means. Some classes of event have very clear and timely signals (e.g. earthquakes) whereas others are more complex to detect. A few areas in which detection based on information shared on social media is feasible include various natural hazards, disease outbreaks, protests and criminal and terrorist incidents.
